In-House Volunteer, East Ronald McDonald House
Thank you for your willingness to give of your time and your talents to the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). We could not do it without you and we want your time at the House to be as fulfilling and pleasurable as possible. As an In-House Volunteer you will provide assistance in the daily house operations that may include clerical, light housekeeping and guest service support. You will promote direct interaction with resident families by actively listening and offering support in a manner that is comfortable for the guest and volunteer alike. This is a non-paid position.
Reports To: Assistant House Manager/House Manager
Qualifications:
- 18 years or older (unless otherwise arranged)
- In good mental and physical health
- Self-directed
- Flexible and willing to perform volunteer duties prioritized by Ronald McDonald House (RMH) staff
- Dependable
General Volunteer Responsibilities & Duties:
- Complete approximately 3 hours of orientation and training.
- Complete at least one three hour shift every other week; one three hour shift per week is preferable.
- Adhere to all RMHC policies and procedures.
- Be familiar with all material related to the operations of the house.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding house guest and RMHC records.
- Accept the right of RMHC staff to dismiss volunteer for poor attitude, performance or attendance.
- Report on time to volunteer shift, leave message in general phone mailbox if unable to volunteer during your scheduled shift.
Specific Duties Regarding Daily House Operations:
- Answer office phone; provide requested information or forward calls and messages to the appropriate persons.
- Greet visitors, providing tours of the House when appropriate.
- Supervise groups performing community service projects.
- Perform light housekeeping duties as needed.
- Record volunteer hours expediently.
- Perform volunteer duties as listed on the project board.
- Complete forms accurately and maintain office files.
- Respond to special requests by staff.
Specific Duties Regarding Interaction with House Guests:
- Take room requests following guidelines provided.
- Be available to answer questions and assist house guests.
Other:
- It is advisable to wear casual clothing that is easily cleaned.
- Do not wear any perfumes, colognes, or after shave.
- Do not come to the House if you are ill or if you have been exposed to chicken pox or other highly contagious diseases.
- Suggestions or concerns of the volunteer are welcomed. Please direct them to the House staff.
- Become familiar with the House procedures and with the House Guests as soon as possible.
- Being available for volunteer continuing education training. Held approximately 4 times a year.
- Volunteers are not professional counselors or chaplains. The role of the volunteer is to be a friend, to listen and to be caring and supportive. On occasion, it may be appropriate to offer practical advice such as encouraging parents to ask doctors and nurses questions about their child’s illness. In general, volunteers should avoid giving or expressing anything negative or judgmental. Think of yourself as a helpful neighbor. If you think someone needs more than a friend, notify the House Manager.
- The volunteer’s primary responsibility is to help the residents in anyway possible and to assist in House management. We count on you to use your own initiative. Try to become a genuine asset to the House and to our families. The more you are willing to give of yourself, not just your time, the more you will receive.
