A History of Helping Children and Families
1982
Inspired by the need to support families far from home whose ill children are in Portland hospitals, the Oregon Medical Association Alliance (OMAA), Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation, regional McDonald’s restaurant owner/operators, and community representatives begin to plan a Ronald McDonald House in Portland, Oregon.
1984
Portland’s first Ronald McDonald House opens within walking distance of Doernbecher Children’s Hospital/OHSU and Shriners Hospital for Children. The facility currently has 16 guest rooms.
1994
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon and Southwest Washington, formed in 1993 by McDonald’s owner/operators, begins granting money to non-profit children’s organizations throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington.
1997
Portland’s Ronald McDonald House East (with 16 guest rooms) opens to families on the campus of Legacy Emanuel Hospital.
2002
Ronald McDonald Houses and Ronald McDonald House Charities merge to become Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon and Southwest Washington. In addition to operating its two houses, RMHC’s Outreach Program begins focusing on children’s immunization and dental care.
2005
Ronald McDonald House East adds eight guest rooms, bringing the total number to 40 for both houses.
2009
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon and Southwest Washington celebrates 25 years of serving nearly 22,000 families with seriously ill children at Portland’s two Ronald McDonald Houses and more than 15,000 children annually through the Outreach Program.
